A valiant City side suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Pride Park as the Londoners claimed the first piece of silverware this term.

Despite a bright start by Nick Cushing’s team, it was the Barclays Women’s Super League leaders who broke the deadlock inside 10 minutes.

Mayra Ramirez collected the ball inside the box and somewhat fortuitously received a second chance to score after her initial effort was saved then deflected into her path - allowing her to tuck into an empty net.

Although Chelsea protected their lead until half-time, the Blues were giving as good as they were getting and carried our momentum into the second 45.

We then equalised through Aoba Fujino who shifted the ball onto her right foot and sent a vicious effort dipping into the back of the net to level the scores.

However, as the match entered the closing stages, Sonia Bompastor’s team restored their advantage when a cross deflected off Yui Hasegawa and found the back of the net.
