The England international has been handed the armband ahead of the 2024/25 Barclays Women’s Super League season following Steph Houghton’s retirement.
It makes the centre-back the second women’s captain since our professional relaunch in 2014.
Entering her fourth season with Gareth Taylor’s side, it’s the latest highlight in an illustrious career which has seen her win two major honours at the Joie Stadium.
And the Blues boss says making Greenwood club captain was a straightforward decision, but he also highlighted the importance of our leadership group which also contains Jill Roord, Bunny Shaw, Laura Coombs, Lauren Hemp and Laia Aleixandri.
“[It was a] fairly easy decision,” he admitted.
“You always look for that club captain to embody everything you’re about and Alex is certainly that. She had big shoes to fill in Steph and taking over in that role.
“What I would add is Alex is a big driver of the way we do things on and off the pitch. She’s really important as well as being a top player.

“She’ll be supported really well with the leadership group. The likes of Jill Roord, Bunny Shaw, Laura Coombs, Lauren Hemp and Laia Aleixandri all form the leadership group, that’s great.
“Alex realises she has some real support behind her. Steph will tell you over the years it can be a heavy armband to wear at times. We certainly need to try and give as much support to Alex as much as we can.
“It was a big transition for Alex, obviously losing Steph. Steph did a lot of work considering she didn’t play an awful lot last season, she supported Alex really well with a lot of small bits off the pitch.
“That allowed Alex to kind of be herself and that’s what the leadership is group is for. To help her. The captaincy at times will rotate on match days which is normal.
“That’s good in a sense, it’s more like a shared thing. Alex is the Club captain and the main figure we really want to embody everything we do at City.”
