Gareth Taylor says he has been very pleased with the way City have started the New Year.

The squad returned to FA Women’s Super League action on Sunday, starting 2022 with a bang by storming to a stunning 6-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion.

All six goals were scored in a sensational second-half blitz – courtesy of five different City scorers and an own-goal.

And Taylor says he was delighted with the manner of which his team powered to victory, producing a ruthless performance, hailing the ‘sharpness’ of his squad.

“I thought we played quite well in the first half – we had moments but we didn’t turn them into chances, which was mostly down to the final pass or offsides, or decision-making,” he said.

“The first pass, which Keira made, was real quality – it gave Lauren Hemp the opportunity to cross and force the defender to score, which calmed the nerves.

“It was the same last year: when you go 3-0 or 4-0 up against Brighton, they keep coming. You have to ensure everything is right, stay resolute and score goals, finishing off the play in the right manner and we did that well in the second half.

“You’re never sure how players will come back [after the Christmas break] but we look sharp, fit and in good spirits, which is all you can ask for.

“This gives you confidence going into the next game but we have to do all of the little bits we know are really important, and move onto the next.”

Taylor also reflected on a memorable week for Lauren Hemp, plus the welcome returns of Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze. Watch in the video above…
