Gareth Taylor was full of praise for City forward Lauren Hemp who has been in phenomenal form for the Club in the opening months of the 2023/24 campaign.

The England international has scored five goals and totalled two assists in her 10 appearances across all competitions.

Her two strikes in City’s 2-1 comeback win against Aston Villa in our last home game of 2023 saw her net her 58th and 59th goals for the Club.

As a result, she has moved within touching distance of City’s top two goal scorers – Nikita Parris with 62 and Georgia Stanway with 67.

And at the age of 23, Taylor is seeing Hemp’s game continue to flourish in her sixth season in blue.

“At the moment yeah I think so,” said Taylor when asked if Hemp is on track to beat her previous season’s goal contribution tally of 22.

“I mentioned in my last post-match interview that I think she’s taken her game to really really high levels and I think she plays with freedom, we give her a real solid platform to work on and we really like you say have worked hard to crunch those numbers a little bit higher – from all the players.

“There is a lot of positive signs at the moment both at the top end of the pitch and also what I mentioned about the defensive record as well so I think that’s ultimately going to help us and Lauren has played a big part in that.”

It’s City’s second time this season travelling to Walton Hall Park after our 2-1 Conti Cup win over Brian Sorensen’s side in October.

Goals from Jess Park and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw were too much for Everton to overcome despite former blue Toni Duggan netting in added time.

During the press conference, Taylor highlighted the importance of City’s final game of 2023 against a tough Everton side and how a win is vital in keeping up with title contenders Chelsea and Arsenal who both sit three points above City.

“It’s the most important thing,” said Taylor when asked about closing the gap in the top three and finishing 2023 on a positive note.

“Everton’s results have been here and there but performance wise they’re always energetic and aggressive with and without the ball. It’s a good game for us, one we’re looking forward to and we know if we’re in good moments with high energy and purpose we’ve seen good things and more recently some good performances as well.”
