Gareth Taylor says Filippa Angeldahl’s opener in our vital 2-0 victory over Chelsea gave us the confidence to gain three points over Emma Hayes’ side.

The Swede fired us into a deserved lead on 21 minutes when she spectacularly lobbed Ann-Katrin Berger from just inside the right edge of the box.

City were then in the ascendency and doubled our advantage only nine minutes later when Lauren Hemp sent a stinging first-time strike into the top corner after Laura Coombs teed her up.

Following a dogged second-half display, where we went toe-to-toe with the reigning league champions, we secured a crucial win which moves us to second in the Barclays Women’s Super League table.

And Taylor was proud of how his side executed the game plan against the Londoners.

“It [the first goal] gives confidence,” he said.

“We had it here against Arsenal [where] we started the game tremendously well and you want to be rewarded for that.

“Sometimes you don’t get that, but we got it in those early goals and I think the first goal gave us the confidence to get the second.

“From then on, we spoke at half-time, and said ‘3-0 kills the game, 2-0 is still a difficult scoreline to manage’, but I thought we managed it really well in the second half.

“Really pleased, really satisfied with what the girls produced today. I thought we attacked the game really well from the start, put them under huge pressure.

“I think both of our goals, if I remember rightly, came from winning the ball back and then showing that bit of quality to finish off really well.”
