Gareth Taylor says defender Laia Aleixandri was at the heart of City’s strong 4-0 victory over Durham in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The Spain international played the full 90 minutes at Maiden Castle and helped the visitors maintain a clean sheet as we secured passage into the fifth round.

Our defensive stability laid the foundations for the success over Claire Ditchburn’s side as goals from Laura Coombs and Mary Fowler either side of a sublime Jill Roord brace extended our unbeaten run to four straight matches in all competitions.

And the boss also paid tribute to the Netherlands international after we made the perfect start to 2024.

“I thought Jill was really good today – with and without the ball,” Taylor explained.

“She picks up good positions, trying to find her was the difficult part. We tweaked a few things at half-time which helped and it allowed us to find her a little bit more.

“Laia [Aleixandri] seemed to be finding her a lot and I thought Laia was excellent today. I felt she was a big presence for us in possession and most of the good stuff – it usually involved her and Alex [Greenwood].

“Considering we’ve had the break and everything else – the players look good and players contributed from the sidelines as well.

“All in all, I’m fairly happy.”
