Gareth Taylor says Mary Fowler showed incredible character to overcome her missed penalty and score the decisive goal in City's 2-1 win over Arsenal.

Fowler’s brace, which included a last-minute winner, sent City through to the final of the Subway League Cup where we will face Chelsea at Pride Park on Saturday 15 March.

It was her fourth in two games - all against Arsenal - with the Australian international in incredible form in front of goal.

And still only 21 years old, Fowler showed fantastic maturity to overcome a saved spot kick midway through the second half and ultimately grab the winner.

It was another top performance from the forward, who Taylor felt demonstrated her incredible work ethic for the squad.

“It was great. I felt it was a nice moment for us to celebrate,” said the manager after the match.

“I think the players really deserve that after their performance tonight. Sometimes you don’t get it, but I felt if we were going to go into extra time, I really fancied us to get a goal because we were knocking on the door a lot tonight and we showed good character.

“Obviously we missed the penalty but Mary scored a brilliant goal before that and it could have extended our lead a little bit more.

“We surrendered a bit of possession to Arsenal in periods, but I thought the character that the team showed and especially Mary, and because she had the real bit between her teeth and it didn’t really affect her, the penalty, which is sign of a top player.

“But I think she gave so much to the team tonight. Everyone really worked hard to to get us over the line.”
