City boss Gareth Taylor believes the best is yet to come from in-form midfield Sam Mewis.

The American international has hit the ground running in impressive fashion after returning from injury, finding the net six times in her last five matches.

And that hot streak has been recognised in a poll conducted by broadcaster ESPN FC, which saw her voted as the Best Women’s Player.

While Taylor insists Mewis has a huge part to play in City’s enticing two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, he is convinced she is yet to reach her full potential.

He said: “Sam is one of those leaders who drops into both brackets, via her actions but also with her communication with the other players.

“I think the young players really look up to her and the example she sets in games and in training on a regular basis, she’s always looking to improve and grow as a player.

“(But) we feel we can help Sam in terms of making her even better and the good thing with Sam is she has a really open mindset to that.

“She’ll admit herself she isn’t the finished article, there’s plenty of learning and development to come and she has every chance.

“In terms of her form and the stats she’s been great, but I believe she has a lot more to give and Sam would say the same but it’s great to have her.”

Barcelona will unquestionably push City to our absolute limits, having ruthlessly dispatched Danish side Fortuna Hjorring 9-0 on aggregate in the last-16.

The Spanish champions’ form has also transferred onto a domestic setting, where they have incredibly won all 19 of their league fixtures.

Nonetheless, Taylor was quick to stress that if City want to be considered the best, they have to prove they can beat the rest.

“It’s a difficult tie but whoever you face in the quarter finals, there’s a reason why these teams are there,” he reflected.

“There are no easy games.

“It’s a good challenge for us and them and one we’re really looking forward to.”
