Gareth Taylor won’t be taking Hammarby lightly on Tuesday despite a comprehensive defeat for the Swedes last time out in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

City are flying high in the competition as Group D leaders, having seen off Barcelona 2-0 at home and St Polten 3-2 away.

Hammarby beat St Polten 2-0 at home in their opening contest before succumbing 9-0 away to reigning UCL champions Barcelona.

Taylor described this result for Hammarby against the three-time champions as ‘misleading’ and thinks they will be tough opponents regardless this week.

“I felt in that game they were still committing and engaging and trying to be aggressive,” he said.

“We’ve seen an aggressive game from them - the St Polten game was fast paced, both teams attacking a lot and a lot of attacking transition and defensive transition. I don’t expect many changes with that.

“I spoke about Barcelona in the press conference after we beat them here and said the reaction from them would be good. Why? They’re the champions and this is why they’ve won a lot.

MATCH PREVIEW | CITY V HAMMARBY

“I said their reaction will be to regroup very quickly. The way they went out and literally hammered Hammarby was impressive. Not surprised by that by any means.

“Do I expect the same game tomorrow? Probably not because we know sometimes the margins will be very tight.

“I think I am expecting them to be aggressive in what they do and we need to be prepared for that.

“It [the 9-0 result] was misleading for Hammarby but not misleading for Barcelona. They’re more than capable of doing that.

“Do I expect that type of outcome tomorrow? No, I don’t. Are we trying to do that? Of course. We want to replicate what Barca have done over the last few years, which is really tough. We’re on the journey to try to get to that level.

“It was a surprising result to be honest but that’s what they can do to any team in any type of moment.

“They are very difficult more often than not, Hammarby, to be broken down. They make it really difficult - defending sometimes with a five sometimes with a four.

“They are quite energetic in wanting to jump out and be aggressive in their pressing actions. We’ll be prepared for that and be aware of the space they may leave.”
