Gareth Taylor says his players will use Steph Houghton’s announcement that she will retire at the end of the season as extra motivation to win the WSL title.

The City legend will call time on a magnificent career for club and country after the completion of the current campaign.

And Blues’ boss Taylor says his players are determined to bring the title home as a fitting epitaph to her playing days.

“If we didn’t’ have enough motivation to win it, now because of Steph, we do,” said Taylor.

“We announced that when we spoke to the players. She’s driven so much on and off the pitch.

“This season has been different for her with less playing time, but her contribution has been huge, she’s helped me and the staff so much.

“It takes a special person to do that. The players know what she’s given, and we want to give it back. We want to do it for her, for sure.

“All our efforts are pushing for these final five games, and it’ll settle when she’s not around.

“We always want to recognise the greats and Steph’s right up there.

“I’m sure maybe not immediately but further down the line we’ll get to honour her in the right way.”
