Gareth Taylor says City will build and kick-on from Tuesday’s UEFA Women’s Champions League season opener away at Real Madrid.

In our first match of the 2021/22 campaign, City and the Spanish hosts fought out a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested second round first leg encounter.

Caroline Weir’s early second half strike was cancelled out by an injury time Real leveller to set up next Wednesday’s second leg at the Academy Stadium.

Reflecting on the result and looking ahead, the City boss said there was much to build on.

“I thought it was probably a fair result if we’re honest,” Taylor asserted.

“We had good spells in the game, and we started really well for the first 20 minutes.
“We made a few errors which allowed them to gain opportunities from set plays and that’s kind of what happened in the end really.

“I thought the second half we really improved. We made a few little tweaks and some changes to freshen things up and there were some really good bits about our second half play.

“We just couldn’t see out that final bit but like I say I think a draw overall is a fair result.

“Before the game we probably would have taken that especially where we are in our preseason so it’s one to look forward too next Wednesday.”
