Gareth Taylor has heaped praise on City’s celebration in tribute to Jill Roord following our 2-0 Barclays Women’s Super League win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The players made their way over to the dugout following our early opener at Brisbane Road, with Lauren Hemp raising a shirt with the Dutch international’s name and number on the back.

It comes following the unfortune news that Roord faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament against Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

Taylor is confident that the midfielder will come back even stronger than before, but was equally proud of the tribute his players gave her.

“She’s a special player, but it was a great nod to Jill [Roord] with the first goal. It shows what this group is,” the boss reflected after our seventh successive win in all competitions.

“I didn’t know it was planned but it doesn’t surprise me with this group.

“I think Steph [Houghton] will have had a hand in it which says everything about her. I think it was a really nice touch.

“She’s had some bad news but we’ll really support her in getting where she needs to be and I think she’ll come back even better.

“Sometimes when these things happen it tells you everything about a person and Jill was with the team today, she travelled with us and it was nice for her to be here to have that moment.”
