Gareth Taylor says he’s delighted with how quickly Jill Roord has settled into his City ranks.

A summer signing for Wolfsburg, the Netherlands international arrived at the Joie Stadium with a wealth of elite experience after helping the German outfit to the Champions League final last season.

Shortly after joining the Club, the versatile midfielder went on to star at the Women’s World Cup for her nation by scoring four goals which helped Andries Jonker’s team reach the quarter-finals.

Ahead of our 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League curtain-raiser against West Ham this Sunday, the boss believes Roord adds a new dimension into his engine room – especially goals from midfield.

“All midfielders depending on the type are prepared to score. She has the capability,” Taylor explained.

“Top player and we’re here to help her even more. Settled well and testament to the girls here that players can slot in straight away.

“She’s a good signing for us and one we’re pleased to have. Looking forward to having her for two or three years.”

Another City player who enjoyed a valuable World Cup was Mary Fowler who featured six times and scored and assisted once, respectively, for Australia.

It followed a promising maiden season at the Club where she scored five goals and registered three assists which has Taylor excited about what she could achieve in sky blue next term.

He added: “I think there’s always been signs there with Mary that she’s a top player and talent.

“She needed and had time to settle. We knew we wouldn’t see best straight away but we saw glimpses.

“Saw her best and where that will be on the pitch, and she has the ability to play a number of positions.

“Having her back more recently with the group and Australia not having a camp was really beneficial. She’s showing high levels at the moment and [I’m] excited about what the season will bring for her.”
