An in-depth interview with Manchester City’s Women’s Director of Football, Nils Nielsen.

Having previously enjoyed a successful managerial career on both a club and international setting, Nielsen moved into his current role at the City Football Academy in May 2023.

In doing so, the Dane took charge of coach and player development across the first team set-up, while also leading on player recruitment across the women and girls’ pathway at the Joie Stadium.

It’s been a hugely successful period for the Club both on and off the pitch over the past 12 months, with City in the thick of the Barclays Women’s Super League title race with just four matches remaining.

Elsewhere, our groundbreaking deal with baby gear brand, Joie, saw us become the first WSL Club to secure a commercial agreement for its stadium naming rights, while January saw the announcement of a new purpose-built training facility at the CFA.

Nielsen reflects on that impressive progress on and off the pitch in the above interview, while also talking about some of the exciting opportunities on the horizon.

Our Director of Football also discusses our January transfer business, which saw City bring in three exciting young talents on deadline day in Laura Blindkilde Brown, Tara O’Hanlon and Poppy Pritchard.

Nielsen explains how the injury of Jill Roord affected that recruitment strategy, while also outlining what made each of our new signings stand out.

In his first interview with the Club in May 2023, Nielsen highlighted the importance of retaining key players from the existing squad, and the Dane also chats about the strides that have been made so far in this area.

With Gareth Taylor, Khiara Keating, Leila Ouahabi and Yui Hasegawa all extending their City stays this season, our Director of Football added that he’s hopeful of further agreements in the coming months.
