Goalscorer Janine Beckie says Manchester City went into the Women’s FA Cup final knowing that nothing but a win would be good enough for the defending champions.

City retained their trophy with a hard fought 3-1 victory over a spirited Everton side, which was settled in extra-time.

Beckie scored the third goal with the final kick of the game, and she said City’s performance in the additional 30 minutes is a credit to the team’s effort in training.

“It’s a testament to the work we had done on our game and our fitness,” she said.

“When you have the ball you do less physically, but going into extra time is not easy regardless of how much of the ball you have.

“We put in a real shift. I am so proud of the whole squad.

“Coming into the game, everyone knew it wouldn’t be good enough not to win.

“We dug in, scored a couple of really nice goals and kept a couple of really nice chances out of the goal through Ellie.”
