Lauren Hemp says it is important attendances continue to grow in women’s football as she expressed her excitement at the prospect of playing in front of a bumper crowd against Chelsea on Sunday.

The blockbuster fixture between two of England’s biggest clubs forms part of Women’s Football Weekend, an initiative designed to put the women’s game in the spotlight.

Hemp is thrilled to be involved in such an occasion, which sees 12 games from the Women’s Super League and Championship available to watch live on TV and the FA Player.

City’s meeting with the defending champions will be broadcast on Sky Sports, but thousands of fans are still expected to be in attendance at the Academy Stadium and the England international hopes those numbers can be achieved beyond this weekend.

“It’s really important,” she said.

“We want to grow the women’s game as much as we can. You have seen in recent years how much it has grown.

“I think we are set to get a record attendance at the weekend. It is really exciting and it is really important we get fans to the games.

“When I was younger there wasn’t that much growth in the women’s game at the time and there wasn’t much on TV.

“Now you can see how much it is in the media and across your TV screens and the amount of people that come to games - it is really important we get that week in week out.

“It is really exciting and something I like being involved in and I would have loved to have watched and supported back home when I was younger.”
