City were edged out by the Londoners after Wieke Kaptein’s header on the stroke of half-time.
It was disappointing for the Blues, who twice hit the woodwork and forced several fine saves from Hannah Hampton, but just couldn’t find a breakthrough.
Vivianne Miedema hit the post in first half stoppage time, before being denied one-on-one around the hour mark by Hampton.
Kerstin Casparij was the other unfortunate City player to strike the woodwork early in the second half, with Hampton also pulling off exquisite saves to deny Yui Hasegawa and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw among others.
It wasn’t to be for City, with the irrepressible Lauren Hemp inches from an equaliser her performance deserved in the dying seconds.
The Blues’ 16-match unbeaten run comes to an end, but with the two sides facing each other in ten days, there’s a quick opportunity for revenge at the Etihad Stadium.
