The title was secured with a game to spare on 25 September 2016, thanks to a 2-0 win over Chelsea at the Joie Stadium.
A battle between the league’s top two, the Londoners were the only team still in with a chance of stopping Nick Cushing’s side from finishing top of the pile, but goals from Jill Scott and Toni Duggan was enough to down the reigning champions.
Scott opened the scoring just after the half hour mark in front of a then-record Joie Stadium crowd of 4,096 when she headed home Duggan’s corner through a crowd of bodies.

And Duggan would get in on the act herself early in the second half when she slotted home from the penalty spot after Lucy Bronze was brought down inside the area.
City would ultimately see out a 2-0 win, earning a 12th clean sheet of the WSL season in the process.
Indeed, much of the Blues’ success was built on that outstanding defensive record, with Cushing’s side conceding just four times in 16 WSL matches, and just seven times across 23 in all competitions.
And to cap off a truly memorable campaign in style, a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City in October 2016 would ensure we went the entire WSL season unbeaten, having also sealed the League Cup crown a few weeks prior.
