Esme Morgan says City will use the disappointment of last weekend’s Women’s FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa as a positive in the crucial league clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Victory will propel Gareth Taylor’s side over Chelsea as the battle for the FA WSL heads towards a thrilling conclusion with Manchester United and Arsenal also in contention.

Morgan, who returned to action against Villa after an Achilles injury sustained in January, says City – with no other distractions outside of the league – are ready for a final push for glory.

“We feel really positive ahead of Chelsea – we were all really gutted about the result last Sunday against Aston Villa, losing in that manner when we felt we had enough chances to have won the game,” said Morgan.

“The goals we conceded were sloppy and it just left us feeling frustrated and angry, but I feel we’ve turned that into a positive and it’s like, ‘come on, let’s do this’ and focus on the league.

“We know we have to win every game between now and the end of the season, and everyone had galvanised themselves after last weekend and we have a fighting mentality and we’re ready for anyone.”

On her return to action, Morgan said: “I feel really good because it was a weird injury – it wasn’t like when I broke my leg – I couldn’t really do anything, it was just managing the pain, so it was great to be back on the pitch against Aston Villa, even though the result wasn’t what we wanted.

“Playing 120 minutes was a little bit of a shock to the system after not playing for a while, but, as I say, it was just great to back with the girls again.

“I missed travelling to away games and had some FOMO when they were all on the coach and having our little chats in the hotel the night before a game, so it feels really good to be part of that again and back for the run-in.”
