Steph Houghton says she’s ‘happy’ to get on the scoresheet as City recorded a superb 6-2 Barclays Women’s Super League victory over West Ham.

With the scoreline 4-1 midway through the second half, thanks to goals from Chloe Kelly (two), Laura Coombs and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, our centre-back extended the lead when ghosting into the far post and volleying a flick on into an empty net.

It represented her first goal of the season as we went on to collect three vital points in an enthralling affair.

What’s more, the success and the goal against the Hammers came on our skipper’s birthday!

And Houghton revealed her strike came as a result of hard work on the training field.

“We spoke about this yesterday in training,” she explained.

“It was just about [making sure] we actually get on the end of set-pieces, corners and to have that one come off and to score with my left foot, I’m really happy.

“And on my birthday as well!

“That’s all I wanted, for us to get three points and to score that many goals, we should be really proud of ourselves.

“We’ve had a bit of a break, but [with] five games to go we’ve just got to give it everything and I think the girls did that today.”
