Goals from Lauren Hemp and Jill Roord ensured City got our 2023/24 WSL campaign off to a winning start.

Gareth Taylor‘s side were in control for the majority of proceedings, but couldn’t translate that pressure into goals in the first 45.

However, the dominance paid off soon after the restart when Hemp picked up play from Aleixandri and curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner of the West Ham net from distance.

City were presented with a huge opportunity to double the advantage in a matter of minutes when Chloe Kelly‘s cross was handled inside the West Ham penalty area.

The winger stepped up to take the spot kick, but was denied from 12 yards when Mackenzie Arnold guessed right to parry the effort away from danger.

However, City didn’t have to wait long to extend our lead, with Roord turning away from her marker and finding the bottom corner with a clinical finish before the hour.

We were reduced to ten when Leila Ouahabi saw red for an off-the-ball incident with 20 to play, but Gareth Taylor‘s side held firm to preserve the clean sheet and all three points.
