City academy duo Angus Gunn and Kean Bryan both played 90 minutes as England U17s defeated Portugal on Saturday night.

The pair, regulars for the Blues’ U18 side, both acquitted themselves well in a good team performance that yielded a 1-0 win for the Three Lions – despite having a man sent off after 40 minutes.

Another City youngster, Ashley Smith-Brown, was called up to the squad but had to withdraw because of injury.

This was the first in a series of three matches in the Elite Stage Qualifying Round of the European Championships held this summer, with fixtures against Russia and Slovenia to follow.

Bryan was involved early on, sending a shot just wide of the post from the edge of the box, while goalkeeper Gunn made a superb stop with his legs from Rui Moreira at 0-0 which would prove crucial.

Chelsea’s Alex Kiwomya grabbed the only goal of the game with a cool second-half finish.

What a win with 10 men, buzzing for the three points and the clean sheet. Not even half way there though got to stay focused #EnglandU17s
