The 17-year-old made his first team debut earlier this season, coming off the bench in the EFL Cup victory at Swansea, and wants to continue to make an impression at a senior level.
With a sell-out crowd expected at the Academy Stadium for Tuesday’s first leg of the youth football showpiece, Diaz is hoping to excite the first team boss against his Chelsea counterparts.
He said: “Pep is always watching our games. Even if he is not here, he is watching our clips. He loves football and he will be watching us, especially in the Youth Cup, because he likes to watch the youth team.
“He likes to move the youth players up and if we keep doing well, maybe we will get a chance. Why not?”
This is City’s third consecutive Youth Cup final - falling to this year’s fellow finalists in both 2015 and 2016. Having been part of last year’s side, Diaz understands the pain of defeat but believes Lee Carsley’s side can go one better in this campaign.
He said: “Last year, it was challenging but this year we have to win because we have a good team – individually and as a team. We’ll go for it and we’ll try to win, trying our best. If we play as a team, we can win it this year.
“It doesn’t matter if you play bad or good but you have to win.”
The Spain U19 international has played in a range of different positions throughout the season but he’s happy to be versatile as he appreciates the quality of his teammates.
“We can win because we have so many good players in different positions. It’s nice to be in the final and I want to win it this year. We have to take it and win the FA Youth Cup this year,” said Diaz.
“You have to play everywhere they need you. You are improving the more games you play. It doesn’t matter where or for which team. It’s not about age or level – we are all at the same level.”
City will host the first leg on Tuesday before travelling to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday 26 April and Diaz can’t wait to play in front of bumper crowds.
He said: “We need support. The fans are always amazing. We need them here to support us and we will be more excited for it. If you see the fans singing, it’s better for us and it’s a great experience.
“We need the support and we will try to do our best and win the FA Youth Cup for the club.”
