Simon Davies expects the Manchester City FA Youth Cup squad to gel nicely ahead of Thursday’s third round game against Plymouth Argyle.

The EDS boss will be managing the squad throughout the competition which will consist of players from both City’s Under 18 and Under 23s.

Last season, the Blues reached the final against Chelsea, but lost 6-2 on aggregate to finish runners-up.

“We will be approaching it the same as any other game,” the manager explained to ManCity.com.

“We’ve got a lot of games – two games a week – and it’s really good for us in terms of playing with a bit of fatigue at times, managing your own body and also making sure that everyone gets good game time and exposure which we hope will continue into the second half of the season.

“With half of them being from the Under 18s and more from the EDS group I’m expecting them to gel together nicely as myself, Gareth Taylor and the rest of the coaching staff all work to the same methodology and philosophy.

“When this has happened before it’s worked quite well and we’ve done well in the competition in the past.”

Davies has managed both the EDS and the Under 19 side who compete in the UEFA Champions Youth League, and feels his side of reaped the benefits of those tests.

“With us being such a young team and most of us playing in the UEFA Youth League as well, in terms of the EDS we expected this – there’s been a lot of good challenges for the players,” he added.

“We are really pleased that we’ve gone a little younger with the squads to provide the challenges and in every game there has been a challenge.

“We’ve had some good exposure out of that.

“When you don’t apply yourself in the right way we’ve turned out second best, but that’s part of the development.

“In terms of the Champions League we’ve done really well and everyone is getting good game time as well, and that’s what our aim was at the beginning of the season and now – half way through – we are on track with that.”

Manchester City head to Home Park on Thursday 14 December to face Plymouth Argyle Under 18s, kick-off at 7pm.
