Manchester City U18s defender Tyreke Wilson is delighted to be back from injury and can't wait to get back on the pitch for Lee Carsley's side - starting with Saturday's trip to Derby County.

Left-back Wilson started the season in Lee Carsley’s team but injury forced him to miss several months of the season. The Irish youth international then returned to the squad for last week’s victory over Newcastle.

He said: “Having a hard few months out with my injury was mentally tough but getting back now is just the best feeling. I’m flying and I can’t wait to be back out on the pitch. I’ll need to build up to playing 90 minutes again but I’m looking forward to that so much.

“I’ve done a lot of running on my own, which was the toughest part to keep motivated through, but I had to look at the bigger picture. Now that I’m back working with squad every week I can see how much it helped me.”

The 17-year-old has used his time away from the pitch to improve his game and he hopes that can help him, starting with Saturday’s trip to Derby County.

“I’ve done some individual stuff with the analysts and added quite a lot of tactical knowledge to my game. It’s helped me to grow off the pitch but now I’m ready to show that through my game and playing in my position,” he said.

I felt really comfortable when I came on last week. I had a lot of the ball and didn’t have much to defensively but I felt good with the ball at my feet and that’s the first step.

With Lee Carsley’s side in the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals and still unbeaten in the U18 Premier League, Wilson is hopeful he can play a major role in the final few months of the season.

He said: “I feel confident and I hope I can help the team. All the lads in the squad are assured and we believe, if we stick to our game, we can beat anyone in the country. It’s important we take it game by game and that should help keep our focus.”
