Several young City players hoping to get the nod for next week's FA Youth Cup final first leg laid down a marker in Wednesday's 3-0 away win over Carlisle in the Pontin's League.

Slovakian keeper Filip Mentel will be pleased to have kept a clean sheet as he continues his comeback from the pre-Christmas knee injury that has kept him out of action until the last week.

After a lively opening at Brunton Park, which saw both sides have chances to take the lead, City opened the scoring on 28 minutes when Clayton McDonald rose above the defence to head home from a Mouritsen free kick.

Karl Moore could have doubled the lead almost straight away, but his shot from near the penalty spot hammered against the bar before going over the top.

Mentel kept it at 1-0 to City with a fine save from Aranalde, and the Blues went into the break two goals to the good when Alex Nimely-Tchuimeni’s left-footed drive from 12 yards out flew past Howarth in the Carlisle goal on 45 minutes.

The Blues had the better of the second half and sealed the win with five minutes to go. Nimely-Tchuimeni broke down the right flank and chipped the ball over to James Poole, whose flying scissor kick left the Carlisle keeper with no chance.

The next Pontin’s League fixture for City is at home to Morecambe on Wednesday April 2nd, kick off is at 2.00pm.
