Hiwula put City 1-0 up with a neat finish following a header from Adam Drury, but Everton equalised before King restored the hosts’ lead before the break after great work from Emyr Huws.
In the second-half, the Blues bossed most of the game, retaining possession and gave a controlled, professional display, but though City were the better side, Everton refused to lie down and only a terrific save from Ian Lawlor on full-time prevented the visitors leaving with a point.
As a result, the young Blues maintain their three-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the Barclays Group C table as a result.
