On 65 minutes, Wolves spurned the chance to level, when Gavin Bazunu thwarted Conor Carty, after the forward had raced onto a loose ball.
As the hosts pushed for a late equaliser, the game opened up, creating chances for both sides.
Substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru forced Smith into another fine stop, clawing around the post, while Keke Simmonds also tested the Wolves shot-stopper.
At the other end, the home side found themselves within inches of levelling when Theodor Corbeanu crossed for Terry, whose effort rolled narrowly off-target.
That proved the closest the Midlands side would come to snatching a draw, and City held on for victory.
What it means…
The victory moved City to within two points of sixth-placed Stoke, with three games in hand.
Taylor’s side have 24 points from 17 games.
