Never mind the Grand National! The Etihad Player of the Month stakes for March produced a cracking photo-finish in the tightest race we've seen in the history of the award.

Three Blues thoroughbreds thundered across the line fuelled by your votes, and it needed a careful count to separate them before super centre-half Vincent Kompany emerged victorious.

The Belgium defender, outstanding for much of the season, enjoyed 26 per cent of the poll but it was barely enough to squeeze him ahead of Nigel de Jong on 25 per cent and Micah Richards with 23.

As if that wasn’t enough of a thriller, Joleon Lescott signalled his fine form by galloping in just off the pace with 19 per cent. Yaya Toure was a gallant fifth, several lengths behind on seven per cent.

Vincent, who seemed to miss neither a tackle nor a header all month, will receive his award at Carrington from lucky Blues fan Linda Salt, who had just posted Vince a card for his 25th birthday on Sunday.
