Alex’s career was commemorated during City’s 5-1 victory over Fulham on Saturday, September 2 where he was welcomed onto the pitch by a guard of honour, made up of CITC participants, before receiving a special gift from CEO Ferran Soriano and Head of City in the Community, Michael Geary.
Following retirement from his full-time role at City in the Community, Alex will take on a non-executive role as Life President for the charity, meaning he is welcome at any meeting or event of his choosing.
He announced his retirement back in April saying: “This wasn’t an easy decision for me and my family but at some point, in time everything must come to an end.
“I feel now is the right time for me to step away from City in the Community, but I am proud to have represented this fantastic Club for the last 45 years on and off the pitch.
“During my 33 years with CITC, I have worked with an incredible group of people to deliver a whole host of activities which have helped to improve the lives of thousands of people within the local community.”
Over the last few months of his time at CITC several activities have taken place to create a lasting legacy for Alex.
Recently City have renamed a pitch at the CFA in honour of the former goalkeeper.
Prior to his retirement Alex released his autobiography. You Saw Me Standing Alone is the compelling story of one of Manchester City’s most loyal servants.
The evocative title of his autobiography, borrowed from the lyrics of the song Blue Moon, depicts his lonely battle against racists who targeted one of the game’s first modern-day black goalkeepers.
