The team travelled down to Shrewsbury Town’s Stadium, The Croud Meadow, on the First Team bus to compete against Swindon Town.
Around 50 teams from football club community organisations were a part of this year’s competition which kicked off in September, with the CITC team successfully making it all the way to the final game.
The competition is run by the English Football League, with any players registered on a post-16 education course with their football club’s charity eligible to enter.
It aims to provide competitive playing opportunities for young people of all abilities, giving them the chance to get involved in a league competition with their club community organisations.
Although it was not the result the CITC team had hoped for on the day, they still had an amazing time, taking second place in the competition.
Reflecting on the competition, BTEC participant Lucy said: “It was a great experience for all the team. To get to play at an EFL stadium with my friends is a memory that will last a lifetime.”
Jess, another BTEC participant added: “It was unfortunate to not get the result we hoped for, but we fought a great battle, and it was a brilliant day for everyone involved.”
BTEC Education Officer, Laura Woodcock, spoke about the importance of opportunities like this for the participants.
She said: “Our BTEC girls once again reached the CEFA Cup Final, which is a massive achievement.
“They were lucky enough to use the First Team bus to travel down to Shrewsbury Town FC and compete for the Cup after a long and successful run during this season.
“The day was filled with excitement and togetherness, and it embodies everything we are about on the City BTEC.”
The City BTEC programme is delivered across three locations across Greater Manchester. The two-year education programme delivers a holistic education of football, as well as a classroom-based curriculum.
During the 2024/2025 season, participants on the programme gained 70 qualifications collectively, giving them the skills they need to take the next step into the future.
