The Club’s Charity, City in the Community (CITC), has released a new story in its participant story-telling series, ‘We Are City in the Community.’

Each month CITC is spotlighting its work and programmes through the voices and stories of its participants across Manchester.

In the latest story, Tom, a City Careers participant discusses how City in the Community’s employability pathways helped him progress from work experience into a permanent job role in a local coffee shop.

Talking about his work experience, Tom said: “The programme provided me with great employability pathways.

“The coaches helped me to gain work experience in a local coffee shop, where we learnt barista skills and all about how life would be working in a coffee shop.

“Through this placement, I was able to secure employment, so now I’m a full-time barista, whilst also still taking part in the City Careers programme, further developing my skills.”

Tom also discussed how the course allowed him to gain new skills, as well as developing upon ones he previously had.

He said: “I’ve learnt a lot through my time on the City Careers programme.

“They provide you with a lot of opportunities to test your skills in a lot of different areas.

“It’s had a huge impact on my life, it has brought me out of my shell more and has been valuable when it came to finding a job.”

City Careers is an eight-week employability programme, working in areas of deprivation to provide health and education benefits, with the aim of supporting young people in education and employment.

Throughout the course, participants work with CITC staff and external partners, on a series of employability workshops, with a focus on developing soft skills such as CV and cover letter writing, interview practice and how to approach job interviews.

There is also the opportunity to gain qualifications, such as Level 2 Community Sports Leadership, First Aid Qualification, as well as Food Hygiene and Sale2Site Online CSCS qualifications.

Since September 2022 to August 2023 649 qualifications were awarded to participants on CITC employability courses.
