City in the Community (CITC) is marking Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, February 8 as part of a week full of activities.

From Monday, February 7 until Friday, February 11, CITC will be celebrating its own ‘Digital Awareness Week’, incorporating Safer Internet Day and its messaging through its sessions.

The charity’s aim is to raise awareness of being safe online and encourage positive conversations about the digital space.

Workshops will also encourage young people to speak to an adult they trust, if something is worrying them in either the virtual or real world.

Safter Internet Day is an annual global campaign that links into CITC’s own Digital Awareness Week, both encapsulating the message of how to stay safe online, whilst having fun.

Each year a new theme or issue is explored which impacts on the lives of young people, with 2022 being all fun and games, exploring respect and relationships online.

The theme challenges them to create supportive relationships and be part of respectful communities, whilst equipping them with the skills and awareness to keep themselves and others safe whilst online.

The digital world offers a wide range of opportunities for communication, education, and entertainment for us all.

However, interaction with the digital world is starting much earlier and young people are shaping the interactive entertainment spaces.

CITC celebrates and embraces this yet feel that it is important to educate and help raise awareness of safety within the digital world.

Deborah Glynn, CITC’s safeguarding officer said: “The world of digital media is ever changing with new apps, websites and games coming out on a regular basis and helps us all to stay connected in so many positive ways.

“Being online is an amazing way for us all to play, create, learn and connect but it is also important that we are all aware of the risks and play our part in helping to keep children safe.

“Through CITC’s ‘Digital Awareness Week’ we aim to celebrate the digital world and use our practical sessions to help raise awareness amongst our participants and share top tips in how they can keep themselves and their peers safe when online to allow them to enjoy the virtual space in a positive and safe way.”
