The Club’s Charity, City in the Community (CITC), are marking Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, February 7, with a week of bespoke activities and social action.

From Monday, February 6 until Friday, February 10, CITC will be celebrating its own ‘Digital Awareness Week’, incorporating Safer Internet Day and its messaging through its sessions.

The charity’s aim is to raise awareness of being safe online and encourage positive conversations about the digital space.

Workshops will also encourage young people to speak to an adult they trust, if something is worrying them in either the virtual or real world.

Safer Internet Day is an annual global campaign that links into CITC’s own Digital Awareness Week, both encapsulating the message of how to stay safe online, whilst having fun.

Each year a new theme or issue is explored which impacts on the lives of young people.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of talking about life online and putting children’s and young people’s voices at the forefront and encouraging them to help shape online safety and the support they receive.

The digital world offers a wide range of opportunities for communication, education, and entertainment for us all.

However, interaction with the digital world is starting much earlier and young people are shaping the interactive entertainment spaces.

CITC celebrates and embraces this yet feel that it is important to educate and help raise awareness of safety within the digital world.

Deborah Glynn, CITC’s safeguarding manager said: “The internet is really a wonderful thing with great impact and reliability.

“It’s important to open conversations about the internet with young people to help raise awareness and understand their feelings and fears as well as discovering what young people find enjoyable online and promoting how it can help shape their futures.

“It is important that CITC plays our part in educating, empowering and raising awareness about the digital world.”

For the first time, CITC will be also broadcasting life from the City Football Academy, as part of a special online Safer Internet Day workshop, ran by CITC’s Safeguarding Manager, Deborah Glynn.

Keep an eye out across all CITC’s social media channels to keep up to date on what they will be doing on Safer Internet Day and throughout the week, as well as top tips for how to stay safe online.
