City in the Community is celebrating Digital Awareness Week with various activities across its programmes.

Over the next few days, CITC coaches will be delivering educational workshops and activities around the theme of ‘Together for a Better Internet’.

Participants from City Play, School Sports projects, Inspires, BTEC and One City Disability will benefit from activities and workshops, helping them with the understanding and awareness they need to stay safe online.

Coaches aim to give young people the skills to support one another, and the strategies to spot and speak out against harmful and misleading content online.

Today, the CITC team will also mark Safer Internet Day by delivering bespoke training sessions to Cityzens Giving Young Leaders in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, so they can continue to spread the message in their communities.

CITC staff will also have access to digital awareness support via a dedicated Safeguarding Focus of the Month on Thursday.

What is Safer Internet Day?

Safer Internet Day inspires a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively.

Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees thousands of organisations get involved to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

Safer Internet Day 2021 celebrates the amazing range of information and opportunities online, and its potential to inform, connect and inspire us, whilst also looking at how young people can separate fact from fiction.

The campaign focuses on how we can know what to trust online, supporting young people to question, challenge and change the online world. It will explore how influence, persuasion and manipulation can impact young people’s decisions, opinions and what they share online.

Deborah Glynn, City in the Community Safeguarding Officer, said: “We all spend more time online than ever before, especially youngsters who are staying inside for extended periods due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We at CITC are therefore dedicated to supporting our participants by helping to raise awareness of how the internet can be misleading or harmful, and empower them to speak out or ask for help.

“We hope that all participants enjoy their sessions and would like to thank the Young Leaders for helping to spread this important message around the globe!”
