Prior to Manchester City’s match against Southampton on Saturday 26 October, the veterans walked 106 laps of the 400-metre Manchester Athletics Track to commemorate 106 years since the end of World War One and the start of the Remembrance campaign.
Remembrance Day was first commemorated to remember the huge losses after World War One. Today, the anniversary is used to remember all the people who have died in all wars since.
Covering 40,400 metres, equivalent to just over 26 miles, the veterans spent five hours walking and running the track before entering the Etihad Stadium to take part in further Remembrance Day activations.
Speaking after the challenge, Aaron, a CITC participant, said: “It was an incredible opportunity to be a part of, thank you City in the Community. Remembrance is an event close to my heart.
“For me it’s important that we remember my friends that gave their lives to protect us and that their sacrifice is never forgotten. We will never forget.”
Jay, another participant, said: “This is the fourth time I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of taking part in the remembrance event at Manchester City.
“As a veteran, it is important to remember all of our fallen brothers and sisters and to relay that message to the younger generations so that the stories and history of the people before us are carried on.
“The event itself was a massive success. I’m proud to not only be a part of but to captain such a prestigious group of people, and the way they conducted themselves on Saturday was incredible. I would like to thank the Military Vets team, and I would also like to thank the club and City in the Community for the incredible opportunity and their support for us!”
Participants finished their challenge, by walking over to the Etihad Stadium where they stood pitch-side, paying respects during a minute’s silence and the playing of The Last Post.
With thanks to MCR Active and Manchester Athletics Centre for the use of their space.
The Military Vets project sits under CITC’s Healthy Communities pillar, which helps armed forces personnel stay active during and after transition to civilian life.
It is a space for ex-military personnel to engage with each other, and enjoy the social aspects which team sports give, whilst maintaining regular physical exercise.
