Participants from City in the Community’s (CITC) Military Veterans’ programme remembered those who we have lost and who have served on Remembrance Day.

The Military Veterans teams walked from the Fletchers Arms in Denton with weighted bergens through Manchester to the city’s Cenotaph, where they paid their respects.

From there they set off to the Etihad Stadium ahead of Manchester City’s game against Brentford, where they stood pitch side, paying respects during a minute’s silence and the playing of The Last Post.

The CITC Military Veterans programme was set up more than four years ago when Moving Forces contacted the charity, looking for a military programme that kept them active, as well as providing veterans with a form of socialising with people who have experienced similar things to them.

Programme Leader, Peter Bradshaw, shared his thoughts on the walk.

He said: “It was a great occasion for us to get together as a group and complete a challenge, with it culminating in an appearance on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium.

“Raising awareness around Remembrance Day and its significance to serving members of the military and to veterans is so important.

“It was amazing to get such support from the public while travelling through Manchester and then the incredible reception from the City fans at the game.”

The programme has since grown from strength to strength, starting off with just three participants to now stand at more than 50.

New veterans are always welcomed to the sessions on a Tuesday night 8pm-9pm at the City Football Academy Indoor Pitch.

If you would like to support CITC and their work, you can this Christmas through Manchester City’s ‘A Time For Giving’ campaign.

For every purchase a fan makes for a range of selected Christmas retail clothing items, available online and in the City Store, the Club will donate £5 to its charity, City in the Community.

Fans can also make additional donations at the tills in the stadium store, when checking out during their purchase journey for match tickets and via www.mancity.com/CITC.

City in the Community, Manchester City’s charity, moves with city youth to empower healthier lives through football. The Military Veterans programme sits under the Healthy Communities pillar, connecting people in safe, inclusive environments.
