City in the Community (CITC) has been working to support young refugees living in Manchester.

CITC, Manchester City’s official charity, has been delivering sessions to support the early development of children.

Families have been able to access free City Play Together sessions.

The sessions are tailored for young children to help them physically learn and build confidence.

The situation the families are facing, and their culture are highly considered therefore the sessions have an open-door policy with zero expectancy.

All activities are led and instigated by the children and their families with support from coaches which helps them explore and feel valued.

The key objectives for the sessions are to develop early motor skills, encourage parents to play games with their children, adapt to their new space and use everyday items as substitutes for our equipment.

The coaches also read stories to help families work together on communication and language skills.

Louise Carpenter from Manchester City Council: ‘’It has been a pleasure to have Manchester City working with our young children. They have provided fantastic support.

“The team have done amazing work teaching the younger children how important it is to play and how play teaches them invaluable skills from an early age. It has been helpful to their parents also so thank you.”

Early Years Officer, Fuzail Patel, said: “We are honoured to support young children from Afghanistan and hope with the power of the City Play Together programme and the excellent coaches we have supporting them, it can help children and families build a foundation for a comfortable and successful childhood physically, mentally and socially.”

We would like to thank everyone at Manchester City Council for engaging with our teams and hope to continue this support in future.

Today’s story follows the start of Refugee Week which is running from June 19 through to June 25.
