150 fans completed the inaugural Etihad Abseil yesterday (Sunday 10 July) in aid of the Club’s charity, City in the Community (CITC).

Supporters braved the dizzying heights of the stadium’s East Reception turrets, with funds raised going towards CITC’s mental health programme, City Thrive.

Blues aged from eight upwards took part in the event, which was sponsored by Nescafe Azera.

Margaret Carmichael, 93 from Knutsford, was the oldest participant to complete the drop, raising and incredible £2,000 in the process.

Speaking to City in the Community, she said: “I have found today very overwhelming, but age is just a number.

“I did enjoy it and I am glad I’ve done it. It was extra special to have my daughter and granddaughter doing it right there with me.”

Everyone who took part received an event t-shirt and certificate, whilst enjoying activities and entertainment throughout the day – CITC also paused all abseils between 2 and 3pm, so fans could enjoy Manchester City’s player unveil event at West Reception.

The funds raised will help the charity ensure its mental health programme, City Thrive, can continue for longer.

In case you missed it here is a look back at some of the day through CITC’s Instagram Takeover.

City Thrive was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to help provide support for thousands of people aged up to 25.

The programme itself utilises a blended approach, using football sessions, group workshops and one-to-one mentoring to educate students around mental health subjects whilst also equipping them with the tools to regulate their own mental wellbeing in a post COVID-19 landscape.

In partnership with the NHS, City Thrive also places a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Clinician within the charity four days a week, enabling young people to access immediate support when they need it.

Senior Fundraising and Partnerships Manager, Sam Dainty, said: “We have been overwhelmed with the level of support fans have given the charity today.

“Not only did people push their minds and bodies to the limit, but they did also it whilst raising thousands of pounds to support young people in Manchester. We’d like to thank everyone who took part or donated.

“This was our first Etihad Abseil, but we can definitely see it becoming a new fan favourite and look forward to giving even more people the chance to scale the heights of the stadium again in the future.

“We’d also like to express a huge thank you to Nescafe Azera, whose support has helped to make this event as impactful as possible.”
