Cityzens Giving for Recovery, City Football Group’s ground-breaking 12-month recovery drive, is bringing together its nine clubs, thousands of staff, and millions of fans, to help communities get back on their feet in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of Cityzens Giving for Recovery, we are matching donations for the funding of nine recovery-linked projects near each of our clubs (*up to a total of £500,000 matched against all donations received on or by 31 August).

Today, we launch a special series taking a closer look at the projects earmarked in each of our nine chosen locations.

In Manchester, the long-term impact of the Coronavirus crisis on children’s mental health has been highlighted as a major concern amongst parents and carers.

Physical activity, including football, can play an important role in improving the mental health and well-being of young people.

The many benefits include an improved mood due to the hormones released through exercise, better sleep, a beneficial impact at managing stress and anxiety, improved self-esteem and the opportunity to connect with other people.

This project will support young people in their recovery by embedding mental health awareness and understanding across all existing City in the Community projects targeting participants aged 14-25 years old.

A mental health curriculum group will be developed, and project staff will be trained to have the knowledge they need to both identify and support participants as well as referring them for further help if required.

Martin Ingham-Griffith, Community Outreach Manager for City in the Community, said: “We will embed mental health awareness, support and understanding across all community projects in Manchester supporting thousands of young people every week.”

Young Leaders will also play an active role in supporting the delivery of the curriculum in schools and community events, as well as providing a peer-to-peer support network for participants of a similar age.

This project will be delivered by City in the Community in Manchester.
