Our iconic Class of 1976 will be special guests at Saturday’s game against Newcastle United.

It was 50 years ago next week that City saw off this weekend’s opponents 2-1 to secure a second League Cup success for the Club.

Goals from Peter Barnes and Dennis Tueart earned the memorable victory for Tony Book’s men and ensured captain Mike Doyle held the trophy aloft in front of 100,000 fans at Wembley.

Tueart’s winner, in fact, has been voted the greatest moment in the history of the competition!

To mark the milestone, a host of Blues from that winning squad will be in attendance for Saturday’s 20:00 (UK) kick-off.

They include Willie Donachie, Kenny Clements, Asa Hartford, Tommy Booth, Colin Barrett, goalscorers Tueart and Barnes as well as the family of manager Tony Book and captain Mike Doyle.

They will watch the current crop from the appropriately-named Legends Lounge and will also be pitchside for interviews in the build-up to kick-off.

And when Pep Guardiola’s team come out for the clash with Eddie Howe’s Magpies, the Class of 1976 will form a Guard of Honour.

It’s somewhat fitting that City’s Class of 2026 will be looking to lift the League Cup later this season 50 years since that wonderful Wembley win.

Our digital estate – mancity.com and our official app – will have a host of fantastic content coming up to remember this landmark win next week.
