The 2020 Cityzens Giving Young Leaders Summit, presented by Etihad Airways, got off to a busy and productive start on Monday.

In the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic, this year’s event is, for the first time, being hosted digitally with more than 250 Young Leaders from 23 cities around the world taking part.

The event follows last month’s successful launch of Cityzens Giving for Recovery, City Football Group’s transformative initiative aimed at bringing staff and fans together to help our communities get back on their feet in the wake of the pandemic.

The 2020 Summit was opened on Monday by welcome messages from both Etihad’s CEO Tony Douglas and City Football Group CEO Ferran Soriano.

This year’s week-long Summit then got under way with events structured over three different time slots over the course of the day reflecting the worldwide geographical spread of our Young Leaders.

Participants took part in specially tailored seminars and workshops on a host of key topics including leadership in a crisis, adapting community football for social distancing, delivering impact remotely and helping promote COVID-19 recovery through the power of football.

The sessions were delivered by City in the Community in Manchester, Melbourne and New York with support also provided from wider club staff and Young Leaders.

Staff from Manchester, Melbourne and New York all spoke to the Young Leaders about their personal experiences of leadership in uncertain times and how this has adapted in 2020 in the wake of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In another new feature for this year’s Summit, the core sessions are being supported by a new high-profile guest speaker series focused on sharing inspiring leadership journeys and lessons with Young Leaders over the course of the week.

For the opening day’s talk, former City and England central defender Micah Richards addressed more than 150 Young Leaders and CFG staff in a special Q and A session.

Micah was able to provide fascinating insight into his own leadership journey, his time at City as well as detailing how, since retiring, how he has been able to get involved in the Club’s work in the community.

The 2020 Young Leaders Summit continues on Tuesday with the focus trained on how to create football sessions whilst in lockdown, effective tips to deliver remotely and practical guidance on how to measure the impact of your work.
