Kirsty McDonald, from County Monaghan, Ireland, was among the participants who took part in the Next Gen Summer Programme in 2025, gaining first-hand insight into the world of sport and business at Manchester City.

Recognising the opportunity as one that could support her future aspirations, Kirsty applied immediately for the Next Gen Summer Programme and went on to enjoy a wide range of educational and practical experiences throughout her time in Manchester.

A key highlight of the programme for Kirsty was the opportunity to meet fellow participants from around the world, alongside exclusive visits to some of the Club’s most iconic locations and workshops led by Manchester City members of staff. These experiences provided valuable insight into the wide range of roles available within the sports industry.

Another standout moment came during a visit to a professional broadcast environment, where participants took part in match commentary sessions in a broadcast studio and created a sports article, providing valuable portfolio content and hands-on media experience.

Away from the classroom, Kirsty enjoyed exploring the city of Manchester, with the Etihad Stadium tour proving to be a personal favourite. The tour offered behind-the-scenes access to areas of the stadium not typically open to the public. She also visited the Trafford Centre, taking in its vibrant atmosphere, shops and dining options.

Currently studying in college, Kirsty has already seen the impact of the programme beyond her time in Manchester. After returning home, she shared her certificate and experiences with classmates and teachers, who recognised the value of the opportunity for her academic development.

The programme has helped Kirsty build confidence in public speaking and communication, including an opportunity to interview a local former Premier League and Republic of Ireland international footballer.

Reflecting on her experience, Kirsty encouraged others to take part, highlighting the programme’s unique access to industry professionals and the chance to develop skills that extend beyond football.

“I would highly recommend this programme to others,” said Kirsty.

“it offers the opportunity to meet people from around the world and gain behind-the-scenes access to the life of a professional football team. To anyone thinking of joining, don’t hesitate – it’s an experience you will never forget.”

The Next Gen programme returns in 2026 for students aged 14–17, running over two weeks from 26 July to 7 August.
