While in Africa, the Club legend teamed up with a dedicated team of Xylem employee volunteers and City fans, including from the South Ghana Official Supporters Club, to build two new water filtration towers in Cape Coast, supporting the Dehia community and Oguaa Football for Hope Centre.
Within the four fan volunteers was Calvin, the branch Chair, and Mawuli, the Press Officer of the South Ghana Official Supporters Club.
Calvin said: “Being part of the project means the world to me. It’s a good time to be part of a project like this and being able to affect lives.
“Cityzens Giving coming to Ghana has been amazing and I’m impressed by this community helping another community that needs it the most.
“We take it to granted but water means life and it’s just dream of many who walk miles to get it. Providing a facility like this is an amazing opportunity and It’s a dream to be a part of.
Mawuli added: “It’s been a unique and amazing experience amazing to be volunteer.
“Working with the Club and Joleon has brought us closer to our community. My favourite moment during the project has been seeing children and teaching them how to wash their hands.
“Watching them with cups and the joy they have when they were able to drink from the tower is really special.”
On the last day of the Club’s visit to Ghana, we also arranged a meet and greet with the branch and Joleon at a local hotel.
Here, around 20 members of the branch attended an impromptu Q&A as well as a signing and photo session. We presented the branch with signed shirts to raise money for the branch, as well as gifts for the members there.
During the week in early February, more than 35 young leaders from Play Soccer Ghana received training from Manchester City community coaches and delivered a football and water education festival for 100 local children.
