Having spent the summer enhancing their teaching skills in the kitchen with Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food team, CITC are getting ready to pass on an extensive range of new cooking knowledge to over 3,600 youngsters in a few months’ time.
Strike a Balance, a partnership between the MCFC’s community scheme and Manchester Healthy Schools, was launched in February 2011 and offers free five-week programmes to 120 primary schools across Manchester.
The principal objective of the programme is to inspire young children to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
The youngsters who participate in the programme not only benefit from weekly lessons covering a range of topics from the importance of a balanced diet to how to cook healthy meals, but also get to enjoy a football session after each class.
Commenting on the programme, Jamie Oliver said: “I really believe that the combination of knowing how to cook and being more active is the route to a long and healthy life.
“I am excited that we are making this connection through our work with football clubs and hope it is the start of something that keeps growing.”
Mike Green, Head of City in the Community, expressed the same enthusiasm: “We’re very proud of our Strike a Balance programme and welcome any opportunity to increase the positive impact it is already having on the health of our local community.
“Jamie Oliver’s recipes are world-class and really demonstrate how exciting healthy eating can be. We are confident that working alongside Jamie’s Ministry of Food is going to give our programme a great boost.”
