The only professional sport club to be shortlisted at the event, City was highly commended in the Company of the Year category for the equality and diversity of its work.
The Club is passionate and committed in its efforts to tackle discrimination and celebrate diversity and the acknowledgment from the Global Diversity Company comes after a year in which the Blues have supported high profile campaigns, such as International Women’s Day, Kick It Out, Show Racism the Red Card and Football v Homophobia (FVH).
Central to this has been City in the Community Ambassador Alex Williams MBE, who has worked tirelessly over the past 30 years to make football a more inclusive place.
The former City ‘keeper was present at the awards dinner to collect the highly commended trophy.
“This recommendation is a really proud moment for the Club,” he said.
“Even to be shortlisted by a panel of diversity experts demonstrates the positive progress we have made over the years and we are utterly committed to embedding equality and diversity across all Club operations.”
As part of our ongoing work to ensure Manchester City remains welcoming to people from all walk of life, last year we formed a new internal Equality Working Group to focus on equality and diversity-related issues and examine the best ways to promote best practice.
In addition, each year we proudly support Manchester Pride with our Official LGBT Supporter’s Club – Canal Street Blues – by raising the rainbow flag outside the Etihad Stadium, taking part in the infamous parade on an open top bus, and with matchday activities designed to highlight our work and ensure the Etihad Stadium remains safe and welcoming place for all visitors.
