Launched in 2014, the Roadshow is co-funded by our official partner, Etihad Airways, and will see City in the Community (CITC) coaches visit 75 schools across Manchester to engage with 14,000 primary school students during this academic year.
The Roadshow includes an innovative and specialised piece of equipment that schools would never usually get access to.
This gives children the opportunity to participate in exciting passing drills and fitness challenges and have their shooting and dribbling power and accuracy measured.
Students from CITC’s partner primary schools including St Edmunds, Ashbury Meadow and Crossacres put their skills to the test on the indoor pitch at City Football Academy.
Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany, Brandon Barker each captained a team of young people.
The teams then battled it out against one another on the different stations with the aim of scoring the most points and being crowned the Etihad Roadshow champions.
Team Aguero were crowned the eventual winners and featured students from Crossacres Primary School in Wythenshawe.
Skipper Kompany had stiff competition from his teammates but enjoyed being part of the day.
“Football plays an important role in our local community” said Vincent.
“It’s brilliant that initiatives like this exist. CITC have a real ambition to engage with as many local young people as possible and with the support of Etihad Airways, they are doing such brilliant work. Today has been a lot of fun and it’s nice to see so many schools taking part.”
Head of City in the Community, Mike Green, said: “A big focus for us over the next three years will be increasing the opportunity for children throughout Manchester to access increased physical activity weekly.
“We have a dedicated coaching team going out daily to deliver this fun and engaging project as part of school P.E. lessons and thanks to Etihad Airways, we are able to reach even more young people.”
The Roadshow forms part of a wider School Sport programme which is funded by the Premier League and aims to improve and enhance the quality of sport and physical activity delivered in primary schools.
CITC coaches will also work alongside school teachers to deliver high-quality curriculum time coaching aimed at improving physical literacy and fundamental movement skills.
