City in the Community’s (CITC) walking football team has made it through to the regional semi-finals of The FA People’s Cup, after topping a 21 strong tournament last weekend.

The Foundation entered three teams into the competition, which gives everyday people the chance to compete in their very own FA Cup – categories range from under 14s up to over 50s walking football.

Despite a fantastic effort from all CITC teams, it was the ‘Blue Moon Walkers’ who progressed from the group stage and eased into the final against Preston North End.

After a tight 0-0 draw the match went to penalties where, thanks to some excellent goalkeeping from 68-year-old Kieran Farrell, the Blues came out on top.

Steve Epstein, a member of the winning team, said: “It’s been a fantastic event and for us to win makes the day even better.

“We have been playing together as a team for 12 months now and thanks to the CITC sessions you can see the improvement in our fitness and ability.”

Lee Mannion, Community Football Co-Ordinator, said: “Since launching walking football one year ago the squad has gone from strength-to-strength and we’re proud to be able to enter three teams into such a special event – well done to everyone who took part!

“Our weekly sessions are a great example of how football can be enjoyed by people of all ages and it’s never too late to get involved!”

The team will now play in the regional semi-finals at the end of February.

Walking football sessions take place every Tuesday 12pm – 1pm and Friday 11am – 12pm.
