For almost 30 years, City in the Community has been using the power of football to make a difference to the lives of local people in Manchester and this season has been no exception for the dedicated team of 32 full-time and 30 part-time staff.
More than 6,000 hours of community work has already been delivered to 20,000 local people this season and we continue to use football to tackle pressing social issues in Manchester centred around health, education and inclusion.
We’ve seen 1,000 young people attend our free soccer schools, our flagship disability programme ‘One City’ continues to grow from strength to strength with more than 850 regular participants and 100 local families are engaged with our new healthy eating programme ‘City Cooks’.
City in the Community Week also marks the announcement that over the next three years, CITC will be increasing the amount of physical activity offered to all primary schools in Manchester aiming to improve the health of local children.
Mike Green, Head of City in the Community commented: “My own journey with City in the Community started in 2004 when I started as a volunteer football coach and the sense of pride I feel as we look forward to the future is tremendous.
“Manchester is a great city to live in but we face a number and range of social issues. We’re on a mission to provide healthier and more positive futures for children and we want staff, partners and fans to help us do that”.
Throughout the week you’ll hear from people whose lives have been positively impacted by the work in the community and we’ll be reliving some of our favourite highlights.
The celebrations will culminate on one of the biggest days in the calendar with a dedicated ‘Community Day’ taking place at the Manchester derby. We’ll have exhibition matches from both our amputee and walking football teams, there will be live cooking as part of our healthy eating programme and the team will be warming up in special City in the Community t-shirts.
