City in the Community has joined forces with Manchester Metropolitan University to offer an innovative new degree.
Beginning in September 2018, the degree will develop students who are ready to undertake a career in community coaching at a Premier League club.
Taught at the Etihad Campus, the degree offers two forms of entry. A three year, full-time BSc (Hons) and a two year foundation course, which offers the option to extend to the BSc (Hons).
A big factor in choosing the new course was down to the practical element for current BTEC students Connor, Max, Beth and Robyn.
“I don’t really like the sound of sitting in a classroom all day listening to lectures – so I thought all of the practical elements that this degree offers would suit my learning,” Connor explained.
“This sounds really hands on, and the fact it’s a lot closer to my home is also a bonus because I wasn’t too keen on moving away.”
“We had two meetings here at college with someone from City in the Community and they went through everything in lots of details,” Max added.
“They explained that you get to go out coaching a few days a week, and I really liked the sound of a more practical course – like Connor I find it better to go out and learn on the job.”
Robyn agreed: “Out of all of my options it seemed like the most interesting.
“It’s more practical and you do things on the course that you’ll be doing everyday if you’re coaching in the future.
The four students have seen first-hand the work of City in the Community through their BTEC course and are keen to continue their work with the foundation.
Beth explained: “It’s great the way City in the Community help lots of different types of people from various backgrounds – I like that they use sport to make people’s lives better.”
“For me, I think it’s the fact that City in the Community are always doing new things,” Connor added. “It seems like there’s always new things going on which provides the opportunity for new coaches to help and get involved.”
“They’re very well organised with everything, so you know that if you’re going to do any work with them it’s going to be done properly,” Max said.

“Using the power of football to educate local people is one of our core pillars. We are proud to be delivering the degree in our state of the art facilities and are looking forward to welcoming our students to the site in September.”
